I liked these stories up until the endings, when they seemed to abruptly stop。 I don't need a plot to be fully explained in order to feel like I've had a proper ending, but I do like at least a bit of closure。 With most of these stories, I got to the end and was taken aback when I went to the next page and found a new story had begun。 I liked these stories up until the endings, when they seemed to abruptly stop。 I don't need a plot to be fully explained in order to feel like I've had a proper ending, but I do like at least a bit of closure。 With most of these stories, I got to the end and was taken aback when I went to the next page and found a new story had begun。 。。。more

A series of short stories, some focusing on Peter Grant and others featuring supporting characters from the full length novels, novellas, and graphic novels。 I'm not a great lover of short stories, but I like Ben Aaronovitch's Rivers of London tales, so was willing to give this a go。 The Peter Grant focused ones were the best for me, but all were well written and kept me reading。 There were no momentous revelations that affected the timeline of the books。 A series of short stories, some focusing on Peter Grant and others featuring supporting characters from the full length novels, novellas, and graphic novels。 I'm not a great lover of short stories, but I like Ben Aaronovitch's Rivers of London tales, so was willing to give this a go。 The Peter Grant focused ones were the best for me, but all were well written and kept me reading。 There were no momentous revelations that affected the timeline of the books。 。。。more

I've read a couple of these stories in other publications but it's nice to have them all gathered in one place。 They do make me wish for another full length book, and I wish he'd wrote a novella about Nightingale rather than Abigail, but there's some enjoyable little diversions here。 I've read a couple of these stories in other publications but it's nice to have them all gathered in one place。 They do make me wish for another full length book, and I wish he'd wrote a novella about Nightingale rather than Abigail, but there's some enjoyable little diversions here。 。。。more

Good collection, bit of a mixed bag。 Would help to know all the characters first

I love it when a novelist explores other literary forms to explore his universe。 Jim Butcher has made a cottage industry of it, publishing all sorts of short fiction in various collections (some of them harder to get your hands on than others) as well as graphic novelizations of his books。 Ben Aaronovitch has been less prolific with his Rivers of London short (and sometimes very short) fiction, but has one-upped Butcher's Dresden Files by creating several original stories in the graphic format。A I love it when a novelist explores other literary forms to explore his universe。 Jim Butcher has made a cottage industry of it, publishing all sorts of short fiction in various collections (some of them harder to get your hands on than others) as well as graphic novelizations of his books。 Ben Aaronovitch has been less prolific with his Rivers of London short (and sometimes very short) fiction, but has one-upped Butcher's Dresden Files by creating several original stories in the graphic format。Aaronovitch has also followed in Butcher's footsteps by finding a truly gifted performer, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, to narrate the audiobook formats。 (Butcher uses James Marsters to equal success, though Holdbrook-Smith's range of accents beggars belief。This is the first RoL short story collection, and, as far as I can tell, it contains every single tale out there, and its audio production is *chef's kiss*。 Intros by Aaronovitch for every story, Holdbrook-Smith covering the Peter Grant tales, and a bunch of guest stars, including Alex Kingston (River-meets-Rivers, as it were) affecting a German accent for a new Tobias Winter tale。Aaronovitch has created a lovely, scary, and occasionally violent world of urban fantasy, and I look forward to future volumes, large and small。Highest Recommendation for Peter Grant fans。 。。。more

I'm on a reread of this, working through it in the order of time following Ben's suggested reading order。 (see below) It works better than reading as a whole book which is what I did the first time。 I am able to savour each story in turn。 So far I've read upto the latest book, What Abigail did that Summer which has just arrived on my phone。 I did sneak in a read of Three Rivers, Two Husbands and a Baby, I just couldn't wait。BOOK CHRONOLOGYSS=short story GN=Graphic Novel GN – Action at a Distance I'm on a reread of this, working through it in the order of time following Ben's suggested reading order。 (see below) It works better than reading as a whole book which is what I did the first time。 I am able to savour each story in turn。 So far I've read upto the latest book, What Abigail did that Summer which has just arrived on my phone。 I did sneak in a read of Three Rivers, Two Husbands and a Baby, I just couldn't wait。BOOK CHRONOLOGYSS=short story GN=Graphic Novel GN – Action at a Distance SS – Moment 1 - Nightingale SS – Dedicated Follower of FashionRivers of London SS – The Home Crowd Advantage SS – Moment 2 – Tobias WinterMoon Over Soho SS – The DomesticWhispers Under Ground SS – The CockpitBroken Homes GN - BodyworkFoxglove SummerWhat Abigail Did That Summer (Novella) SS – The Loneliness of the Long Distance Granny GN – Night Witch SS – Favourite Uncle GN – Black Mould SS – King of the RatsThe Furthest Station (Novella) GN – Detective Stories SS – Moment 2 - Reynolds GN – Cry Fox GN – Water WeedThe Hanging Tree SS – A Rare Book of Cunning DeviceThe October Man (Novella)Lies Sleeping SS – Three Rivers, Two Husbands and a Baby GN – The Fey and the FuriousFalse Value SS – Vanessa Sommers Other Christmas List 。。。more

Things that may affect my rating ( listened to from library hoopla app)Lots of fun easy stories - perfect for a trip out to do errands

Okay-ish collection of short-stories and snippets set in the Rivers of London universe。 I'm very picky about my short-stories and unfortunately, the format definitely isn't Aaronivitch's strength。 A lot of the stories read like chapters torn out of a bigger story and the endings mostly just fizzled out。 Still recommendable for fans of the series, since there are some lovely moments with new and old characters。 Okay-ish collection of short-stories and snippets set in the Rivers of London universe。 I'm very picky about my short-stories and unfortunately, the format definitely isn't Aaronivitch's strength。 A lot of the stories read like chapters torn out of a bigger story and the endings mostly just fizzled out。 Still recommendable for fans of the series, since there are some lovely moments with new and old characters。 。。。more

I loved this book of short stories! They were obviously a lot more fast paced than his other books but I also liked the fact that you don't have to concentrate really hard whilst reading it。 We also got to see other character's perspective and problems they have to deal with, I particularly loved the short story about Abigail。 Aaronovitch also changed his writing style brilliantly for the different characters to how we all think they would they would talk which was great。 Again, I think he did t I loved this book of short stories! I want to hear and see things from her perspective。 :( Overall though it was great! 。。。more

As you can see I read this book of tales from cover-to-cover in 24 hours。 Why has no major studio taken up Ben’s work and created an amazing long running series??? But no, we have to suffer Jim Butcher’s tedious Dresden Files。。。 well, don’t get me started。。。

4*Cute, quick collection of all the short stories and moments connected with the Rivers of London series。Just like any collection some are better than others, but overall a very enjoyable read。

Great readJust love this series。 Every book adds different layers to the underworld of London and its minor, and major goddesses and gods

I'm a big fan of Rivers of London series and this did not disappoint。It is a series of short stories, most not involving Peter Grant and adding depth to some characters we have met in other stories。Very enjoyable! I always enjoy the novels in the Rivers of London series and I enjoyed this as well although none of the stories are particularly essential。 However, often they do provide a few more world building details or development for some of the characters (particularly the stories which are not told from Peter's perspective)。 I always enjoy the novels in the Rivers of London series and I enjoyed this as well although none of the stories are particularly essential。 However, often they do provide a few more world building details or development for some of the characters (particularly the stories which are not told from Peter's perspective)。 。。。more

Not sure why I didn't read this sooner, but very entertaining short story collection connected to the Peter Grant novels。 Funny and a perfect comfort read as it made me laugh。 I really want a Nightingale prequel btw! 4 Stars Not sure why I didn't read this sooner, but very entertaining short story collection connected to the Peter Grant novels。 Funny and a perfect comfort read as it made me laugh。 I really want a Nightingale prequel btw! 4 Stars 。。。more

The characters of the Rivers of London books must have been ready and waiting to jump into short stories in their own right。 I think this format works very well for them, and the decision to focus the stories on the minor characters was a really good one。 The stories expand the world in which Peter Grant and the Folly are the centre。

I love the River of London series。Unfortunately for me the short stories didn’t really grab me。

Veldig fine småhistorier og små innblikk i Folly-universet!

The short stories started as add-ons to special editions of some of the Rivers of London novels。 Then Aaronovitch discovered the joys of putting small plots on paper。 Most are told in first person。 The first six feature our usual main character Peter Grant, told as usual in first person。 Then there are four from other points of view, mostly in first person。My absolute least favorite is a 30-page story in this group called "Dedicated Follower of Fashion。" It ends okay, but too much of it is taken The short stories started as add-ons to special editions of some of the Rivers of London novels。 Then Aaronovitch discovered the joys of putting small plots on paper。 Most are told in first person。 The first six feature our usual main character Peter Grant, told as usual in first person。 Then there are four from other points of view, mostly in first person。My absolute least favorite is a 30-page story in this group called "Dedicated Follower of Fashion。" It ends okay, but too much of it is taken up by an unpleasant character, and an obsession with cutting edge fashion and how to finance it。 It's the longest story in the book and the main character doesn't rate that much attention。To end the book are three Moments, as he calls them: short shorts。There are some interesting bits here。 I especially like Peter, but Abigail, Vanessa Sommer, Tobias Winter, and Agent Reynolds (I can't remember her first name) are interesting too and I like hearing more from them。 。。。more

Short writings including both 'scenes' and stories from Rivers of London。 A great series, and this is a lovely companion piece if you are into the books。 Short writings including both 'scenes' and stories from Rivers of London。 A great series, and this is a lovely companion piece if you are into the books。 。。。more

A delightful cream-puff of a book。 Exactly what I needed right now。 I love exploring the expanded universe of The Folly, and this delivered。

I adore the Rivers of London series and I was really looking forward to learning more about the world through these short stories。 I think my favourite new character was Mrs Edna Phillips and I'd love to have a second installment about her summer! I think the only disappointment with these short stories is that they are all very character focused (which makes sense as a device to build a short story around) but it means that the world building is still very focused on how certain individuals engage with the world, rather than what the world *is*。 For example, there are no short stories about the Folly itself。。。 Or for that matter set within the Folly proper, which made the title feel a little misleading。 Nor are there any stories set in the domain of any of the gods - it's all mortals interacting with the magical world。 I would have loved to see a story based in Mother Thames' house or in the courts of Father Thames。However, this doesn't negate the fact that these are wonderful stories that add flavour and insights into the Rivers of London series。 If you're a fan of the series, this is a great addition。 。。。more

Friends old and newishA mixed platter of the very best kind of hors d'ouevres。 Each one a tiny yummy treat that leaves you hungry for a full plate of it。And I do love Ben's knack of making me laugh out loud。So if Abigail (I do love that child) ever has a case down here in Johannesburg, she'd be very welcome to stay with this old ex-pat Scouser lady with a penchant for the local wine, the tarot and artificial intelligence。Ben, just keep writing, will ya?
